Disney Lorcana TCG

It’s time for classic Disney animations to make their foray into the trading card game (TCG) space with Disney Lorcana. The Great Illuminary is the centre of the magic realm called Lorcana, and you have been summoned by Illumineers, magic ink-wielding beings, to help save the realm. You have been gifted with a powerful imagination which allows you to create characters using ‘ink’.

Published by Ravensburger, Disney Lorcana takes inspiration from Magic: The Gathering and other similar card game systems to create a unique take on duelling games where the objective is to send heroes on ‘quests’ and collect 20 ‘lore’. With classic characters such as Mickey, Donald Duck, Aladdin and Simba all returning, you can expect to see your favourite characters appear. Shop Lorcana cards here at Gathering Games.

Top Picks for 2024

Ursula’s Return: In the latest Lorcana set, a dark storm has been brewing in the realm of Lorcana. Ursula from The Little Mermaid features as the main villain of the set and has been unleashed. Ursula - Sea Witch Queen is the chase card of the set and can be placed on top of other card names, ‘Ursula’, for a reduced ink cost. Mulan, Mickey, and, of course, Ariel all make appearances in the latest set. If you’re looking to start your Loranca journey here, the starter decks are a great place to begin, with 2 options to choose from: Anna & Hercules or Mirabel & Bruno. If you want to expand your collection, a booster box or Illumineer's Trove are great picks. But if you want to face off against Ursula in the new solo/cooperative game type, why not pick up the Illumineer's Quest Deep Trouble Gift Set?

Into The Inklands: The Inklands are the surrounding, uncharted lands surrounding the Great Illuminary. They are made up of recreations of famous places throughout Disney's history. A flood has washed away lore into the Inklands, and the Illumineers must journey there to recover it. The set features the new ‘Location’ card type, beloved places from the most popular Disney animated movies, each representing areas of the Inklands. Enchanted foils make a return, but the most precious of all is Ursula: Deceiver of All. This time around the starter decks feature Moana & Scrooge McDuck or Pongo & Peter Pan, both great picks to start playing the game right out of the box. But, if you’re looking to expand your collection, booster packs, booster boxes, the gift set and the Illumineer’s Trove, all make a return!

Lorcana Buying Guide

Starter Decks: Each Disney Lorcan starter deck contains a 60 card preconstructed deck ready to play at the kitchen table. Each focuses on a pair of characters from the Disney Animated universe, each with their colour of ‘ink’. Each type of ink has a distinct playstyle, so pick the deck with your colours if you already know how you like to play. If you’re still figuring out what sort of decks you enjoy, then stick with the ‘rule of cool’: the coolest looking deck is the right deck to pick!

Boosters: One of the most fun ways to expand your collection of Lorcana cards is from booster packs. Each booster contains 12 randomised cards, each with a chance of hitting one of the most valuable cards in the set, like an Enchanted Foil rare. If you’d rather build your deck, booster packs are ideal!

Illumineer's Troves: Similar to the Elite Trainer Boxes from Pokemon TCG, the Illumineer’s Troves are boxed collections containing 8 booster packs and a handful of other goodies like a storage box and some counters to play the game with. It works great whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to bolster your collection.

Why Choose Disney Lorcana

Not only is Disney Lorcana a beautiful collectable, but it’s also a full fledged game with a rapidly growing player base. It introduces a new era to collectable card games as it draws brand new players to the space with an appeal wider than most other TCGs. While its core system is similar to its predecessors, it intentionally reduces direct confrontation that centres around other TCGs by using the ‘lore’ system. The game's objective is no longer to ‘beat down’ your opponent, but instead to send your crew on quests to bring you ‘lore’. This immediately makes Lorcana one of the most suitable trading card games to play with the family. But, if competition is more your thing, you can expect the full suite of tournaments, prereleases and competitive play events.

One of the defining features of Lorcana is how it innovates on the resource cards created by Magic: The Gathering - called ‘lands’ - which are shuffled into the deck. While so many TCGs followed this trend, Lorcana takes a more balanced approach, instead allowing most cards to act as utility and resources with the ‘ink’ system. Say goodbye to missing land drops as the ‘ink’ system rebalances the age old issue created by its ancestors. Each set brings new card types and mechanics in this ever-evolving card game that will undoubtedly stick around for some time.
