Star Wars: Unlimited (SWU)

Star Wars makes its glorious return to the trading card game (TCG) space with the Star Wars Unlimited (SWU) TCG by Fantasy Flight Games! Designed from the ground up to be easy to pick up and fast-paced, it's a card game made for new and veteran players alike.

Top Picks for 2024

‘Spark of Rebellion' is the first set for Star Wars Unlimited and contains over 200 cards in randomised boosters, providing virtually countless strategies to build decks and battle against your opponent. Covering mostly over the era of the original Star Wars trilogy, you can build decks based around Luke, Darth Vader, Leia, and many more.

If you’re new to trading card games, the Two-Player Starter Set for Spark of Rebellion is a great starting point. It comes with two ready-to-play decks based on Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. The set also includes a rulebook, game tokens, and two paper playmats to help you learn the game.

If you’re looking to try your luck, build new decks, or even upgrade some current decks, you can pick up a Spark of Rebellion Booster Box. Each booster pack contains 16 randomised cards, with a chance of opening a rare and valuable card. You can also play the ‘Limited’ format with these booster packs, either as a 3 pack booster draft or a 6 pack booster sealed, where you crack packs and build decks on the fly.

Star Wars: Unlimited (SWU) Buying Guide

Star Wars: Unlimited (SWU) will immediately appeal to anyone who loves the franchise and to board game players. SWU is designed by the team at Fantasy Flight Games, who are renowned for their experience making a wide variety of games like card games and board games. SWU reflects a lot of lessons they have learnt over the years and takes the best of many types of games packed into a trading card game.

If you’re looking for a tightly balanced ‘board game-like’ experience, the Starter Decks will give the best bang for your buck. No deck building knowledge is required, and you can start playing in 5 minutes.

If you're chasing after the valuable cards in the set or would like to try your hand at building a deck, then a booster box would be a great choice for you. Each booster box contains 24 booster packs, providing a total of 384 cards to use for deckbuilding or upgrading.

Why Choose Star Wars: Unlimited (SWU)

Star Wars: Unlimited takes inspiration from previous trading card games (TCGs) before it, but ultimately creates a fresh and interesting take on the genre. ‘Leader cards’, while not an entirely new idea, create tension throughout the game as they are powerful units that can be played onto the battlefield. Star Wars: Unlimited also uses an ‘Initiate token’, which will be a feature immediately recognisable by anyone who plays board games – take an action to guarantee the first move on the next turn. The battlefield is also divided into two lanes, one for ground units and one for space units - manage both effectively to maximise your chances of winning.

From the get go, SWU supports multiplayer (i.e. 3+ players), and ‘Limited’ formats (i.e. sealed and booster draft), giving players a wide variety of both competitive and casual game types to choose from. The adoption of regular events at local game stores has been high, with lots of events appearing across the world, so you will always be able to find others to play with. Why not join in with one of our SWU events at Gathering Games?

While many other Star Wars collectible card games have come and gone, none have created a system as well-designed as Star Wars: Unlimited. We think this one might finally break the curse of previous Star Wars TCGs and actually continue. You can watch our video review for it here. Spoiler alert: we love it!
