Star Wars: Unlimited (SWU) - Shadows of the Galaxy

Shadows of the Galaxy is the second set of the hugely popular Star Wars: Unlimited TCG and will be released on 12th July 2024. This time, we’ll be exploring the far reaches of the Outer Rim, featuring beloved characters from series such as ‘The Mandalorian’.

Of course, that means there will be plenty of bounty hunters featuring, including The Mandalorian himself, who has already been announced as a brand new leader unit (aspects: Conning and Vigilance). Upgrades matter for Mando as he exhausts other units whenever you play an upgrade. Use cheap and effective upgrades like Wanted to place a Bounty on an enemy unit and use the Mandalorians effect to exhaust the unit too.

Moff Gideon also makes his debut as a new leader unit (aspects: Vigilance and Command) - Gideon provides buff to units that cost 3 or less and, once on the battlefield as a unit, gives Overwhelm to other friendly 3 cost or less units. Expect to find powerful new 3 cost units such as Phase-III Dark Trooper to support his game plan and high cost game finishers such as the 8 cost ship Gideon’s Light Cruiser.

If neither of the above leaders suits your playstyle, then you can build a deck based around the other 8 leader units revealed so far, including Hondo Ohnkaka, a new Boba Fett, Hunter, Bossk, Kylo Ren, Bo-Katan and Lando. Browse the Shadows of the Galaxy setlist here.

Oh, did I mention that Grogu will be a card?

New Set Mechanics

Bounty: With a focus on bounty hunters this time , Bounty will be a new keyword attached to upgrades. Attach the upgrade onto an enemy unit to put a Bounty on their head. The player benefits once the unit with Bounty has been defeated or captured.

Capture: Capturing units is also new and works as temporary removal. Cards such as The Mandalorian’s Rifle allow units to capture a unit with a bounty. Once captured, the player collects the Bounty reward. The captured unit sits face down below the unit which captured it and remains there until that unit is destroyed.

Smuggle: Smuggle works by putting the top card of your deck into play as a resource, streamlining the decision of which card to use as a resource. This allows the player to ramp up and play cards that the opponent might not have expecting. If a resource card has Smuggle, it can also be played onto the battlefield like a card from hand, providing a crazy amount of versatility in a game.

Shadows of the Galaxy Buying Guide

Shadows of the Galaxy will be available in 2 main products: booster packs/boxes and the Two-Player Starter.

Shadows of the Galaxy Booster Box: As with most trading card games, the booster boxes will provide a chance for all the most valuable cards, including all of the hyperspace and showcase variants of cards. In the previous set, showcase cards were found in roughly 1 in every 12 booster boxes and always had a high price tag, so expect the same this time around.

Shadows of the Galaxy Two-Player Starter: If you’re yet to dive into Star Wars Unlimited, then the Two-Player Starter is ideal, as you can start playing a game without any deck building knowledge. It includes 2 complete 51 card decks based around The Mandalorian and Moff Gideon. Like the last Two-Player Starter, there will be exclusive cards in here that can only be found in the set!  You can read an official summary of the deck strategies from the Shadows of the Galaxy Two-Player Starters here.

Why Choose Shadows of the Galaxy

Instead of the Galactic Empire setting of Spark of Rebellion, Shadows of the Galaxy focuses on the smugglers and bounty hunters of the Outer Rim. Thematically, this gives more of a spaghetti western style compared to the grand space opera of the first set. In the Outer Rim, morals are grey and heroes are few. Pirates and enslavers are common and often dominate the civilizations in far reaches of the galaxy.

With 10 new leaders announced so far come new and exciting strategies and pairing of aspects (the equivalent of the ‘colour pie’ from other TCGs). Build the deck you always dreamed of building based around your favourite character, mechanic or aspects.

As well as introducing new deck archetypes, Shadows of the Galaxy introduces new support for some established decks from Spark of Rebellion. New tools arrive for matchups against aggro decks like Sabine Wren. Top Target and Sundari Peacekeeper can heal friendly units, slowing down the crucial early turns that establish board presence for aggro decks. Aggro decks also receive more support with a wide range of new, powerful, low cost cards.

Which new archetypes will emerge in the new meta? Only time will tell…
